Finding Your Motivation
You are not alone. Moments of finding your motivation (let alone inspiration) seem to be fleeting, coming and going, ebbing and flowing. As an entrepreneur, it is part of the game to implement a set of business strategies in order to inspire motivation and motivate inspiration. But, the strategies may not always be what you think, or even be directly related to your business.
We can walk away with a new truth from a storyline and stumble upon an a-ha moment watching a rags to riches narrative. In fact, there are movies every entrepreneur must watch. In my experience, engrossing yourself in a must-watch movie is the answer when you are at a stand-still. Put aside your business for a moment. Take a play from my play book. Here are 5 movies every entrepreneur must watch from my personal library.
Finding Your Inspiration
Inspiration doesn’t come when you least expect it, it comes when you seek it out. Motivation starts with taking control of finding your inspiration. Taking back control can come in unexpected ways. It is our job as entrepreneurs is to identify the triggers and replicate the catalysts that are most conducive to finding your inspiration.
Yes, while focusing on your business is key, it is just as important to focus on the framework outside of your business too. Your frame of reference is everything when it comes to finding your inspiration, both inside and outside of your business. And, there are lessons hidden in every day activities, things you enjoy. Watching a movie is the perfect example. A story is something that we can all relate to on a very human level. So, do yourself a favor and take my advice. These are 5 movies every entrepreneur must watch and you should add them to your to-do list.
5 Entrepreneur Movies You Must Watch
The truth is that motivation and inspiration are actually variables that you can control. It may feel as if these mental and emotional states of being are fickle aspirations. But, oftentimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective. Find your motivation and call upon your inspiration through visualization. It’s time to take a step back from being overwhelmed and have some fun watching these 5 movies every entrepreneur must watch – you will thank me!
1. Balance. Baby Boom (1987)
Proving that a work-life balance is possible with a little entrepreneurship, Baby Boom is at the top of the list for movies every entrepreneur must watch. If you are looking for motivational and inspirational, then this is the place to start. Because life at home can thrive, when a small business thrives.
We have all been there, working away the hours until there aren’t any more hours to give. Just remember there are only 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. Trust me, I have not only seen it, but been there myself. J.C. Wiatt (Diane Keaton) plays the part of a workaholic.
Don’t forget that we embarked on this journey to not only build a business to fulfill our passion, but also to build a lifestyle that we love. Balance is the end-goal. Take a lesson from this must watch movie. It is the perfect example of a woman struggling and then succeeding in having it all.
2. People. Jerry Macguire (1996)
Doing what is right by you and other people is always the right choice. In a critically acclaimed movie every entrepreneur must watch, it is a change of heart that is the catalyst for a shift in perspective. Despite being fired, Jerry Macguire pursues a new way of doing business. And, he succeeds in creating a business model that guarantees exponential entrepreneurial success.
And, who doesn’t want that? An honest approach is always the answer. It is about listening to intuition and taking the right risks to make big changes. If you want to be a changemaker (and you are if you are reading this), this is a must watch. As Jerry would say, show me the money!
3. Mold. Office Space (1999)
As an entrepreneur, you are going to break the mold. In fact, at the end of the day, that is the goal. You got into the game to escape the cubicle and mold your own future. You got into the game to work for yourself.
We can all see ourselves in Peter Gibbons. Taking orders from a less-than-stellar boss does not last long. I am not condoning the extremes to which Peter goes to try and get fired. However, the entrepreneurial spirit of a small business owner does not jive with a desk job and the mold of a 9-to-5 employee.
Although Office Space is a comedy, and is meant as a satire, the message is one that we can all relate to. It is on my list for movies that every entrepreneur must watch, if not just to find your motivation to break the mold. If it’s a problem of motivation, then take a moment to remind yourself that you are on this path. It’s about breakthroughs and exponential success!
4. Happiness. The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
We are all promised the pursuit of happiness. But, what does it mean to actually attain it? The answer is a lot of hard work. Work ethic is the name of the game in The Pursuit of Happyness.
The true story of Chris Gardner meets the heartwarming acting of Will Smith and an inspirational rags to riches narrative. You will not see a movie that pulls more at your heartstrings, while helping you find your motivation. It is truly a motivational movie every entrepreneur must watch.
Why watch it? At the heart of an entrepreneur is a dream. To never give up on that dream oftentimes means enormous risk and resolve. Even though Gardner lost it all, left homeless and trying to provide for his son, he gained everything by holding onto the passion that made his dream come true.
5. Network. The Social Network (2010)
The moral of the story is clear. In a movie every entrepreneur must watch, we see how a network is key and that friends matter. But, there is more to the story. True Fact: Ambition is everything. With enough flexibility and resiliency, entrepreneurship will thrive and a small business will succeed.
There is always room to be a better entrepreneur, and the best reminder is a must watch movie like this. I am never disappointed watching the transformation of a Harvard college student into a social media mogul. And, who doesn’t want to watch the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to Mark Zuckerberg. (Even if it is a controversial and somewhat fictional representation.)
